All seafarers get their qualifications and certifications according to STCW. See IMO conventions sections for full name

STCW courses can be listed as follows:

  • Ship Cook Course (CAF): This course is according to Maritime labor convention not STCW

  • The Operational Use of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)
  • Training Course for instructors (TCI)
  • Updating Course for Chief Engineer and Second Engineer Officer on Ships of Propulsive Power more than 3000 kW (UPCE)
  • Updating Course for Master and chief Mate on Ships of 500 Gross Tonnage or more (UPM)
  • Updating course for officer in charge of a navigational watch
  • Updating course for officer in charge of an engineering watch
  • Upgrading course for master and chief mate on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more (UPM)
  • Upgrading course for chief engineer and second engineer officer on ships of propulsive power more than 300 Kw (UPCE)

The training center which provide the courses ,must be approved by the authority which is intended to issue the seaman book and certificate of competency

Not all seafarers get all courses but they get courses according to their experience, educational and position required onboard as shall be detailed in the flowing section

Also the courses only are not enough to qualify the seafarer for certain position as also shall be detailed in the following section “Seafarers education, experience and licenses”

The validity of all courses is five years and before renewing license or seaman book, required courses must be renewed
